What BlueBiodex is

Data Intelligence for Aquatic Ecosystems

BlueBiodex brings together satellite analytics, environmental DNA (eDNA), and water-quality data to monitor biodiversity, pollution, and ecosystem change across rivers, lakes, and coastal areas, enabling evidence-based environmental action.

How BlueBiodex works

BlueBiodex is an environmental monitoring platform designed to provide clear, science-based insights into the health of aquatic ecosystems — from rivers and wetlands to coastal and marine environments.

By combining satellite imagery, eDNA analysis, and on-site water sampling, the platform helps users track biodiversity trends, identify pollution sources, and detect changes in habitat condition over time.

These periodic measurements offer a robust, repeatable way to understand ecosystem performance and support better environmental management, restoration planning, and sustainability reporting.

Indicators

BlueBiodex translates complex environmental data into one clear, science-based indicator:

The Ecosystem Health Index supported by key sub-indicators that track biodiversity, water quality, and ecosystem condition. The Ecosystem Health Index can be tailored to your local monitoring framework.

Water Quality Score:

Evaluates nutrient levels, turbidity, and pollutants

Biodiversity Index Score:

Reflects ecosystem complexity based on eDNA data

Species richness score:

Tracks the number and diversity of species identified in samples

Methodology

Built on Science, Backed by Expertise

BlueBiodex combines cutting-edge environmental technology with expert knowledge in ecology, water management, and marine science.

Our methodology has been shaped through collaboration and dialogue with leading research institutions and public organizations, whose insights have helped guide the development of our indicators and approach.

We are grateful for the interest and encouragement received from organizations such as Wageningen University, University of Utrecht, the Port of Rotterdam, the Municipality of Rotterdam, and Hoogheemraadschap Delfland, who recognize the importance of advancing data-driven biodiversity monitoring.

The (BlueBiodex) technology aligns closely with our ambition to make better use of nature data for policy development, monitoring, and restoration, and contributes to the goals outlined in the National Biodiversity Strategy 2030.

Why biodiversity tracking matters for sustainability reporting

Biodiversity in the ESG & Regulatory Agenda

-

Integrating biodiversity into ESG strategies strengthens transparency, accountability, and stakeholder confidence.

At BlueBiodex, we take inspiration from established sustainability methodologies and emerging regulatory frameworks to ensure our indicators remain relevant for evolving reporting and compliance needs, helping organizations connect biodiversity insights with meaningful environmental action.

BlueBiodex supports ESG and sustainability reporting by translating ecological data into clear, science-based indicators and a comprehensive final report. This report includes references to biodiversity-related sections across key sustainability frameworks, helping organizations understand how their data contributes to transparent and credible environmental disclosure.

The BlueBiodex Health Index brings together biodiversity and water-quality indicators to provide clear context about ecosystem dynamics. These metrics help explain how and why an ecosystem or even specific species is responding to surrounding conditions. By connecting biological and environmental data, BlueBiodex helps organizations understand the ecological context behind their operations. This makes it easier to report on biodiversity outcomes, set environmental baselines, and make informed decisions for the management or design of sites.

Regularly measuring biodiversity creates a clear picture of environmental impact and progress. It supports risk management, enhances credibility with investors and regulators, and enables data-driven sustainability strategies.

The BlueBiodex methodology was developed in collaboration with academic partners and is grounded in scientific principles for water and biodiversity monitoring. Our methodology draws on principles from established biodiversity and water-management frameworks — such as the EU Water Framework Directive (KRW) and WWF’s Nature Positive approach — to ensure indicators remain relevant and comparable across different contexts. BlueBiodex can also be adapted to reflect local priorities and emerging ecological standards, supporting data-driven biodiversity management and reporting.
