Offshore Wind Innovation Challenge: the perfect biodegradable reef

Reefy took on the mission of designing the perfect biodegradable artificial reef as a solution for the 2020 Offshore Wind Innovation Challenge. The purpose of the Challenge to lower the barrier between technology solution providers and those seeking for innovative solutions was perfectly met.

Reefy is the big winner of the NENnovation Award 2020 in the student category. The prize was the crowning glory of the innovation of two TU Delft students. Reefy’s mission is clear: “Restore reefs of coastal and marine areas around the world using knowledge and innovative technologies.” We speak to Daniel Dacomba, founder of Reefy about “A resilient coastal protection solution”.

BlueInvest aims to boost innovation and investment in sustainable technologies for the blue economy, by supporting readiness and access to finance for early-stage businesses, SMEs and scale-ups. It is enabled by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.

The CleanTech Challenge helped Reefy to think more about the business model and financing possibilities. In addition, the challenge made reefy’s business model rethink and improve it.

In 2021, the Municipality of Rotterdam and Boskalis gave Reefy so-called “golden tickets” to participate in the PortXL maritime accelerator programme. In this programme, start-ups and scale-ups are connected with potential clients and networks to test and bring innovations to the market. The Rotterdam Reef project, focusing on the chain from block production to reef monitoring, has emerged from this with pleasant collaborations from all parties to stimulate innovation.

Deltares is an independent institute for applied research in the field of water and subsurface. Throughout the world, they work on smart solutions, innovations and applications for people, environment and society.

“Reefy is pioneering modular reef technology cable of withstanding high energy environments without compromising on ecological performance. Boskalis found great partnership in Reefy whilst collaborating in a multi-milion-dollar tender for the US government. We continue to support Reefy through our ongoing collaboration in the Boskalis Artificial Reefs Program.”

“The Reefy Living Breakwater has been tested in our experimental facilities, showing stability and wave attenuation under hurricane conditions. We see their potential in the field and are looking forward to further collaboration.”

Dr. Marcel van Gent

Professor of Coastal Structures (TU Delft), Head of department Coastal Structures & Waves (Deltares)

“Rijke Noordzee fully supports the new and innovative Reefy concept of stable, mega-sized reef blocks that can enhance marine biodiversity and promote oyster growth in offshore environments.”

Nature in Offshore Wind

“Coral reefs have degraded by diseases, bleaching and physical damages caused by water pollution, global warming and severe storms… The extent of the degradation is severe, losing 80% of live coral as well as more than 1-meter height in barrier reefs. Restoring reefs original height is critical for coastal protection… Reefy proposes to create a solution with complexity and stability and could be an important piece in bringing back marine life.”
